Jute and coir protect disturbed ground while vegetation establishes, the product is the temporary measure, the planting is the permanent one. Installed properly, you get both.
They shield the soil surface from rain and runoff and slow the water down, then biodegrade into the soil as the plants take over the long-term stabilisation.
We install jute and coir the way it should go in: anchored at the top so the edge can't lift, trenched in where the site or spec calls for it, overlaps shingled so the water runs over them and not underneath, orientation to suit the site and the flow, kept in full contact with the ground, and pinned to suit the soil. Where we're planting through it, we use pre-slit jute; for rain gardens and infiltration zones, mesh first.
