Jute Matting vs Coir Logs: Choosing the Right Erosion Control for Your Civil Site

A practical guide for civil contractors and PMs on when to specify jute matting or coir logs, covering batters, creek lines and swales on NSW sites.

Erosion control gets specified late and installed under program pressure, but the choice between jute matting and coir logs is not interchangeable. They solve different problems. Picking the wrong product, or installing it off spec, means rework, sediment breaches and delays you cannot afford on a staged civil site.

This guide sets out when each product earns its place, and how they often work together.

What each product actually does

Jute matting and coir logs are both natural, biodegradable erosion-control products, but they manage water and soil differently.

Jute matting

Jute matting is a woven blanket laid across an exposed soil surface. Its job is to protect the surface from rainfall impact and sheet flow while vegetation establishes. The mesh holds soil and seed in place, slows runoff, retains moisture and breaks down as the planting takes over.

It is a surface-coverage product. Think broad areas of bare, disturbed earth that need to be held together until roots do the work.

Coir logs

Coir logs are dense cylinders of coir fibre, staked into position. They are a linear, structural product. Rather than covering an area, they intercept and slow concentrated flow, trap sediment and protect a defined line such as a toe, a bank or a channel edge.

Where jute spreads the load across a surface, coir logs hold a line against moving water.

When to specify jute matting

Reach for jute matting where you have exposed slopes and batters that need stabilising while revegetation establishes. Typical scenarios on a civil program:

  • Cut and fill batters after earthworks
  • Detention basin sides and embankments
  • Large areas of disturbed ground awaiting native planting
  • Any surface where sheet flow, not concentrated channel flow, is the main risk

Jute pairs naturally with revegetation. The matting holds the seed and topsoil, the tubestock goes in, and by the time the jute breaks down the planting is doing the stabilising. On batters, correct overlap, anchoring and pinning to manufacturer spec is what determines whether it holds through the first heavy rain.

When to specify coir logs

Reach for coir logs where water is concentrated and moving along a line:

  • Creek lines and riparian edges
  • Swales and drainage channels
  • The toe of a batter where runoff collects
  • Sediment interception across a defined flow path

Coir logs slow velocity, trap sediment and give bank or channel-edge planting a chance to establish. On creek-line and riparian works they are often staged with revegetation planting so the root systems take over the bank-holding role as the logs degrade.

They are not either/or

On most real civil sites you will use both. A detention basin is the clearest example: jute matting across the batters to hold the surface, coir logs along the base or inflow line to manage concentrated flow and sediment. The two products cover different failure modes on the same structure.

The practical questions to work through with your erosion-control designer or environmental consultant:

  • Is the risk sheet flow across a surface, or concentrated flow along a line?
  • What is the slope gradient and length?
  • How long until vegetation establishes and takes over?
  • What does the project spec and the manufacturer detail actually require?

Installation to spec is the part that matters

The right product installed wrong still fails. Anchoring, overlap, trenching, pinning density and staking all sit in the manufacturer’s installation detail, and getting them right is what stands up to an audit and to the weather. This is where most rework comes from.
