Splitting erosion control and revegetation across separate crews creates gaps, rework and program risk. Here is why one crew for every stage works better.
On staged civil sites, erosion control and revegetation are often treated as two separate scopes, handed to two separate crews on two separate visits. It looks tidy on a procurement schedule. On the ground, it creates handover gaps, double mobilisation and avoidable rework. After 20+ years across all kinds of terrain, we keep seeing the same lesson: the work goes better when one crew owns every stage.
The problem with splitting the scope
Erosion control and revegetation are not two unrelated jobs. They are sequential stages of the same outcome, holding ground and getting plants established. When you split them across different contractors, the seams between those stages become the weak points.
Handover gaps
When one crew lays jute matting and coir logs, then leaves, and a second crew arrives weeks later to plant, knowledge falls through the gap. The planting crew did not see how the batter was prepared, where the drainage lines sit, or which sections were already showing movement. They plant to a plan, not to what is actually happening on the slope.
Rework and damage
A planting crew unfamiliar with the erosion control install can cut through matting in the wrong place, disturb sediment controls, or compromise a coir log alignment. Then someone has to come back and fix it. Every reinstatement is cost and program time that was never in the budget.
Double mobilisation
Two crews means two mobilisations, two inductions, two sets of access arrangements and two windows where weather can stall the program. On a regional civil site, mobilisation is rarely cheap or quick. Doubling it rarely makes sense.
What ‘one crew for every stage’ actually delivers
We run one crew across erosion control and revegetation because the stages inform each other. The same people who stabilise the batter are the people who plant it. Nothing gets lost in translation.
Continuity of knowledge
The crew that installed the jute matting and sediment controls knows exactly what is under the surface and how the site behaves in rain. When they come back to plant, they work with that knowledge instead of guessing. Decisions get made on site by people who were there for the earlier stages.
Sequencing that fits the civil program
Erosion control and revegetation have to slot into the head contractor’s program without holding up the next trade. One crew can sequence the stages around earthworks, drainage and access constraints, because they are planning both at once rather than negotiating between two contractors with different priorities.
Single point of accountability
When something needs adjusting, there is one number to call. No debate about whether an issue belongs to the erosion control scope or the planting scope. We installed it, we planted it, we own the result.
Where this matters most
Staged and large sites
On large, staged civil works, sections reach practical completion at different times. A single crew can move stage by stage, stabilising and planting each area as it becomes available, rather than waiting for the whole site to be ready for a separate planting mobilisation.
Batters and detention basins
Batter stabilisation and basin works are exactly where the seam between erosion control and planting shows up. Matting, coir logs and planting all have to work together to hold the slope and establish cover. One crew treats them as a single system. You can see this on our Marsden Park basin work, where jute matting and planting were installed as one coordinated job.
Riparian and offset sites
On creek lines and environmental offset planting, timing and ground conditions are everything. A crew that handled the erosion control understands the site’s drainage and soil before a single tubestock goes in.
What to ask your installer
When you are scoping erosion control and revegetation on a civil project, it is worth asking a few questions up front:
- Is the same crew doing both stages, or are they subcontracting one out?
- Who is accountable if the planting damages the erosion control, or the other way around?
- How will the stages be sequenced against the civil program?
- Are both stages installed to manufacturer spec?
If the answers point to two crews and two contracts, expect the gaps to show up later as rework.
The bottom line
Erosion control and revegetation are one job in two stages. Running them with one crew removes the handovers, cuts double mobilisation, and gives you a single point of accountability from the first coir log to the last tubestock. On staged civil sites, that is the difference between a clean program and a string of reinstatements.
