What six months of maintenance actually buys you on a revegetation job

Guides · 20 November 2025 · Planted

Planting day is the easy part. The establishment period is where a job either takes or fails. Here's what a maintenance program covers, and why it's worth specifying up front.

It’s easy to treat planting as the finish line. Crews mobilise, the tubes go in, the site looks transformed, everyone moves on. Then a dry month hits, the weeds come up faster than the natives, and six weeks later the job that looked done is half gone. The planting was never the hard part - establishment is.

Establishment is a window, not an event

Native tubestock goes in small. For the first few months it’s competing with weeds, exposed to weather, and relying on a root system that hasn’t built yet. A maintenance program is what carries the planting through that window to the point where it can look after itself.

What a maintenance period actually covers

  • Watering through the dry. Not forever - just through the establishment window when a dry spell would otherwise undo the lot.
  • Weed control. The single biggest reason new plantings fail. Weeds out-compete young natives for light, water and space; staying on top of them is most of the work.
  • Replacement planting. Some losses are normal. A maintenance period means they get topped up to hit the survival rate, instead of leaving gaps that erode and seed more weeds.
  • Reporting against the spec. On council and civil work, “established” has a definition. Maintenance is how you prove you met it.

Why specify it up front

A six-month (or longer) maintenance option built into the job means someone is accountable for the plants surviving - not just going in. For councils and developers closing out a DA, that’s the difference between a planting that passes its final inspection and one that has to be redone. It’s cheaper to establish once than to replant.

That’s why we build a maintenance option into our revegetation work across NSW. Want plantings that are established, not just installed? Tell us about it.
