The framing matters for anyone who plants this kind of work: revegetation isn’t the cosmetic step at the end, it’s the outcome the whole rehabilitation plan is measured against.
Rehab planting lives and dies on the growing medium
You can put the right species in, at the right density, to the right plan - and still fail if the medium underneath won’t support them. Growth-medium development is where a lot of rehab revegetation comes unstuck: compaction, the wrong profile, no seed bank, no structure for roots to take hold.
The assessments lean on exactly this - identifying the risks around growth medium and revegetation, and checking the controls are there before the planting goes in, not after it’s struggling.
What that means on the ground
- Get the medium right first. Ripping, profiling and amelioration set up everything that follows. Plant into a poor profile and no species list saves you.
- Match species to the rehab objective. Native ground covers and slope stabilisers chosen for the site and the end land use - not just whatever’s available.
- Protect the surface while it establishes. Jute and coir hold the soil and slow the water while the specified species take over the long-term cover.
