Erosion keeps making headlines as a funding fight. On the ground, the lever you control is getting the right stabilisation in early - and installed to spec.
If you specced or won erosion-control work this month, the news read like a funding fight. Coastal councils are pressing Canberra for money and a national plan to hold their coastlines together, and three WA shires have had to write a master plan just to manage the damage four-wheel drives do to their dunes. The framing is always the same: not enough money, not enough policy.
That’s real. But it’s not the lever you control on a job. On the ground, the thing that decides whether a slope or a dune holds isn’t the size of the grant - it’s whether the right product went in at the right time, the right way. That part is entirely within your control, and it’s where most failures actually start.
Erosion is a timing problem before it’s a funding problem
Disturbed ground fails fastest in the window between the earthworks finishing and the vegetation taking hold. That’s the gap erosion exploits - one big rain event on bare batter and you’re paying to do it twice. The WA dune story is the same physics at a different scale: strip the protective cover, expose the surface, and the system unravels.
The answer isn’t exotic. It’s getting a temporary protective layer over the soil while the permanent fix - the planting - establishes underneath it. Jute and coir do exactly that: they shield the surface from rain and runoff, slow the water down, and then biodegrade into the soil as the plants take over the long-term stabilisation. The product is the temporary measure. The planting is the permanent one. Get both in, in the right order, and the “erosion crisis” on your patch is mostly a non-event.
Where installs actually fail
When erosion control fails, it’s rarely the product. It’s the install. The same mistakes come up again and again:
- Not trenched in at the top. If the top edge isn’t keyed into a trench, water gets under the matting and lifts it. Game over.
- Overlaps run the wrong way. Overlaps have to be shingled so water runs over them, not into them.
- Pinned for the wrong ground. Pin spacing and length have to suit the soil - what holds in clay won’t hold in sand.
- Wrong product for the job. Heavy-duty matting for slopes and batters; mesh where water needs to drain through, like rain gardens and infiltration zones; pre-slit jute where you’re planting through it.
None of that needs a federal program. It needs a crew that installs to the drawings and the erosion-control spec, every time.
What this means for your next NSW job
If you’ve got disturbed ground going into winter, don’t wait for the policy debate to resolve. Sequence the stabilisation in early, match the product to the soil and the flow, and install it correctly the first time. That’s the difference between a batter that holds through the wet and one you’re back on in six weeks.
