Planting around a civil program: sequencing and weather

Guides · 7 April 2025 · Planted

On a civil job the planting lands last and gets squeezed. How to sequence it around staging, hold points and wet-weather risk so it doesn't get knocked about.

Planting almost always sits at the tail of a civil program, which means it cops the squeeze when everything upstream runs late. Done badly, that’s where jobs come unstuck: plants go in too early and get driven over, or too late and miss the window. A bit of sequencing discipline fixes most of it.

Plant to the staging, not the calendar

The planting date that matters isn’t the one on the program - it’s the point where the area is actually finished and won’t be disturbed again. Going in before other trades are clear means replacing knocked-about stock later. We schedule planting to construction staging and hold points so it lands once, at the right time.

Respect the weather window

Establishment is weather-dependent. Planting into the wrong conditions - peak summer heat, or just before a forecast deluge onto bare ground - costs strike rate. The fix is reading the window: stabilise exposed ground with jute or coir so it survives rain while you wait for the right planting conditions, rather than forcing plants in to hit a date.

Stabilise early, plant when ready

These two don’t have to happen together. Get erosion protection onto disturbed ground as soon as it’s shaped - that buys time and protects the surface - then plant through it when the program and the weather line up. Decoupling them takes the pressure off both.

Coordinate, don’t just turn up

The crews that don’t hold up a job are the ones talking to the site manager about access, staging and hold points before they mobilise. One point of coordination beats a planting crew arriving to a site that isn’t ready.

The short version

Stabilise early, plant to the staging and the weather, and coordinate the timing - and the planting goes in once, cleanly, without becoming the line item that slips.
