The right natives hold a slope; the wrong ones fail it. How we pick species for batters and cuttings across NSW soils, slopes and aspects.
On a slope, the planting isn’t decoration - it’s the long-term erosion control. Roots are what hold the surface once the jute or coir has biodegraded away. So species selection is a stabilisation decision, and getting it wrong shows up as rills, slumps and a return visit.
Here’s how we approach it on NSW batters and cuttings.
Match the plant to the slope, not the plan
A species list that works on a flat verge can fail on a 1:2 batter. Steeper ground needs deep-binding root systems and dense ground covers that knit the surface fast. Aspect matters too - a hot north-facing batter and a shaded gully are different jobs, and the same mix won’t establish on both.
Read the soil
Clay, loam and sand each reward different species and planting methods. Compacted or clay-heavy ground often needs auger planting for consistent depth and proper root contact; loose soils suit speed-spade work. The mix has to suit what’s actually under your boots, not the generic spec.
Layer the cover
A resilient slope usually isn’t one species - it’s layers: fast ground covers to bind the surface early, deeper-rooted shrubs and grasses for long-term hold. The ground covers buy time; the structural species do the lasting work.
Don’t skip the establishment window
Even the right species fail if they’re left to fend for themselves through their first summer. Protect the surface with jute or coir while roots take, plant at a density that allows for some loss, and budget a maintenance window to replace failures before they become bare patches.
The short version
Right species, right method, right protection, and a plan to get them established - that’s a slope that holds itself within a year or two. Guess the mix and you’re back doing it again.
